How to secure your apartment

In the past I have when I write about security it is mostly focused on the home owner I found it surprising to learn apartments are more likely to be the first target of a burglar.  So it may be a good idea to think about a burglar alarm system for your apartment. A traditional alarm system with key pad door contacts and motion detector may not be the answer for a renter as renters tend to be more mobile or your landlord may set limitation on how to maintain your apartment. There are a few options you have as renter to protect your apartment from burglars.

The first step is to make sure you do the basic first reinforce all entry points to the apartment. When a burglar attempts to break in your apartment they will try a door or a window to see if it is open. So what you must do is tighten up your windows and doors. The front and back door should have deadbolt installed if not you may want to consider having a deadbolt installed.  The strike plate in the door jamb in some apartments may be old so you can install a strike plate with longer screws. Another option would be to install a door latch to the entry door to add extra security while you are home.  A peephole in a door will give you the added protection of knowing who is at the door before you open it. If you do not have a peephole talk to your landlord see if they would be ok with having one installed.  Check your windows make sure the window latches are in working properly for added security you can use a security bar. This is a bar that will prevent the window from being forced open from the outside the window bars are adjustable and they look nice.

A wireless burglar alarm system is the best way to go as a renter. The system is very easy to install the great feature of a wireless alarm system is if you decide to move you can take the system with you. There are many wireless burglar alarms systems out there to choose from your security needs would depend on the lay out of your apartment.  You need to have door contact on all entry doors, a motion detector in the main access area and a keypad. There are some wireless burglar alarm companies who offer a monthly monitoring service at a minimal fee they contact you and the local authorities in the event of alarm activation in your apartment.
