You come home and find that your home or apartment was
burglarized. This is a horrible feeling I know many years ago I came home to
find my home was broken into which was part of the inspiration for starting
this blog. When it happens to me I was lost I didn’t know what to do or even
how to protect my home in the future. The initial shock froze me what do I do?
Who do I tell? How do I recover from this loss? So many questions I didn’t have
the answer for at the time. I hope by taking the steps I have provided in this
blog you never have to go through a burglary. However, if you do come home to a
burglary here are some steps you can take to protect yourself and your family.
When you come home and you find your home has been broken
into call the police. This is the first thing you should do and wait for them
outside your home. You do not know at what stage the burglary took place the
burglar could still be in your home. You should be taking notes on people
passing by or things out of place on the outside of your home. When the police
arrive on scene escort the police in the house show them the point of entry or
how the burglar may have entered your home. After have the police check all the
areas of the home closet, underneath the bed, bushes etc. to make sure the
burglar is gone.
At some point you are going to have to call your insurance
company so you can be made whole again. You need to keep receipts on all your
expensive purchases because they will ask but another option is to take
pictures of all your high value items such as electronics and jewelry this will
help in the recovery process. You can create a folder on your phone for keeping
pictures of your high value items in your home. I have to say my experience
with my insurance company was less than great. When you have to pay the premium
they want their money but when the have to pay you it is a long process.
After the police have completed their investigation and
documented the burglary clean up your home. This will help you start to put
your life back together; the entry points the burglary used to gain access to
your home must be strengthened. If they entered through the front door fix the
locks buy better locks, equip your home with alarm system if you don’t already
have one there are many available. You can purchase an all in one device as
well to protect your home.
I hope this helps as always please leave a comment
